The World Rally Championship season reached its dramatic conclusion in Sardinia following a tense title showdown. The cancellation of the Rally of Saudi Arabia combined with a heart-stopping Power Stage at Rally Italia Sardegna ultimately crowned Elfyn Evans as the new world champion after a fierce points battle.
The Welshman's road to glory was far from straightforward heading into the final stages. Entering the decisive Power Stage, he held a fragile one-point advantage over Oliver Solberg, who mounted a ferocious recovery drive following a puncture in the preceding test.
The immense pressure near the finish line triggered a turning point when the chasing youngster lost control of his machine within sight of the checkers. That costly mistake instantly shattered any remaining hopes of stealing the championship crown away.
Manufacturer dominance was a major theme throughout the year as Toyota sealed another constructors' triumph, matching Lancia's historic milestone of ten manufacturer successes in the top tier of rallying.
Consistent speed across varied surfaces defined a campaign featuring shared victories among the top contenders, underscoring the relentless nature of modern world rallying.
