Max Verstappen suffered a massive crash at the end of the opening lap of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, forcing the race at Zandvoort to be red-flagged. The incident occurred as the track remained damp; Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull while navigating the banked, flat-out Luyendyk corner, touched the white line on the inside, and slammed hard into the outside barrier.
His car rebounded across the track and came to a stop on the inside, but the Dutchman quickly confirmed he was okay. He then apologised to his team for ending his final home race prematurely. Fortunately, no other car collected him; Pierre Gasly of Alpine took evasive action, while Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi narrowly avoided a huge incident after spinning in front of his teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
Before the crash, Verstappen was running seventh after a disappointing qualifying session. Meanwhile, Lando Norris from McLaren maintained his lead through a chaotic start, and championship leader Kimi Antonelli managed to pass George Russell for second place. All cars have now gathered in the pitlane awaiting the restart.
This crash is a severe blow for Verstappen, who had hoped for a strong result in front of his home crowd. With Verstappen out of contention, the battle at the front is now wide open, and team strategy will be crucial in the remaining laps.
The incident also highlights the risks of the notoriously fast and challenging Luyendyk corner, especially in damp conditions. The red flag was deployed for safety reasons, given the extreme danger. The race is expected to resume once the track is declared safe.
