Ducati and Aprilia Respond to Fast 850cc Lap Times Under 2027 MotoGP Rules

Official lap times for the new-generation 850cc and Pirelli-shod MotoGP machines will remain under wraps until the post-season Valencia test on December 1. However, leaked information filtering through from private testing sessions suggests that the 2027 prototype machinery could run remarkably close to the current 1000cc bikes, at least across selected circuits. Despite early indications of strong pace, Ducati Corse general manager Gigi Dall’Igna maintains that the core objective of the incoming rule changes is successfully reining in straight-line top speeds rather than destroying lap records.

Speaking at Mandalika, Dall’Igna emphasized that rider safety heading into heavy braking zones is the absolute priority driving the technical shift. The main reason why we would like to reduce the performance is not the lap time; it's the top speed - the speed that riders arrive at the first corner, Dall’Igna explained. By shrinking engine capacity and lowering power output, the Italian manufacturer believes the championship is taking a necessary step toward mitigating high-speed dangers on the calendar. I think even if the lap times are quite close to the '26 lap time, I think that we can gain something in safety, so, honestly speaking, I think that this is a step that we have to take, he added.

Meanwhile, Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola pointed directly to the staggering benchmark speeds established by the current generation of 1000cc bikes. Earlier in May at Mugello, both Jorge Martin and his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi shattered the all-time speed record by clocking an astonishing 368.6 km/h. In Mugello, both Marco and Jorge did 368.6 km/h, and it's quite a lot, Rivola noted. Estimating a power deficit of roughly 50 horsepower for the incoming 850cc powerplants, Rivola expects a tangible drop in terminal velocity.

So removing more or less 50 horsepower for sure is going to reduce that speed, Rivola continued. From what we are seeing, the lap time seems to be quite fast, still. At the same time, the comments of the riders are that the bike is easier. So maybe they can handle a bit better. But it's better to look forward rather than backward, since it's done. While single-lap pace appears surprisingly resilient, Rivola cautioned that full race simulations could reveal a more pronounced performance delta compared to the outgoing Michelin-shod 1000cc prototypes.

Complementing the downsized engines and new tire partnership, the 2027 regulations will permanently ban ride-height devices while enforcing stricter aerodynamic limitations. Fuel allowances will experience downward adjustments, though a four-kilogram reduction in minimum weight aims to preserve agile mid-corner agility. Also, we don't know if in race distance, if the time will be the same, Rivola concluded, highlighting that the true competitive landscape remains full of unknown variables.
