Stefano Domenicali has urged Max Verstappen to remain in Formula 1 and avoid being driven by “emotional dimensions” amid ongoing criticism of the 2026 regulations. The appeal follows Verstappen’s strong remarks questioning the direction of the sport under the new technical framework.

The Red Bull Racing driver has been vocal about his dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the increased emphasis on energy management, which he believes compromises racing quality. During the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, Verstappen indicated he could consider stepping away from Formula 1 if the situation does not improve.

In response, discussions were held during the April break involving Formula 1, the FIA, teams, and drivers to address emerging issues from the opening rounds. Key concerns included excessive energy saving during qualifying laps, as well as significant closing speed differentials between cars.

A direct outcome of those talks is a regulatory adjustment to battery energy deployment in qualifying, effective from the Miami Grand Prix. The maximum recharge level has been reduced from 8MJ to 7MJ, a measure designed to limit super-clipping and reduce reliance on lift-and-coast techniques that have affected performance consistency.

From a technical standpoint, the change aims to stabilise power delivery and ensure more predictable performance across a qualifying lap. By reducing extreme energy management scenarios, the regulation tweak is expected to improve both competitiveness and safety, particularly in traffic-heavy conditions where speed differentials can become critical.

Domenicali emphasised that Formula 1, as a global sport with a vast audience, requires a constructive approach from all stakeholders. He cautioned against negative narratives and confrontational attitudes, noting that such dynamics do not contribute to the sport’s development during a complex regulatory transition.

Highlighting Verstappen’s status as a four-time world champion, Domenicali reiterated his hope that the Dutch driver will continue competing in Formula 1. He pointed to the unique competitive intensity and adrenaline of the series as key factors, while stressing the importance of maintaining focus on long-term improvements as the championship progresses.
