Daniel Ricciardo has opened the door to a potential racing return by teaming up with his former Red Bull Formula 1 teammate Max Verstappen at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours.
Despite confirming his permanent retirement from professional motorsport following his exit from the F1 grid after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, the 37-year-old Australian admitted he is open to a one-off endurance appearance if it allows him to close his career on his own terms.
Speaking on F1’s Beyond the Grid podcast, he reflected on his mindset shift regarding a potential comeback. "A year ago, I would have said I will never put a helmet on again. I’m done. That’s it. But there is something there where I’m like, it’d be nice for me to also finish a racing career a bit more on my terms," he stated.
He emphasized that sharing a car, working with real teammates to analyze data, and experiencing the unique camaraderie of endurance racing would bring him immense joy. When asked to name his ultimate dream teammate for such an event, he did not hesitate to mention the reigning world champion.
"I don’t want to put pressure on him, but obviously Max is a name that would be high on the list. We talked about Red Bull obviously in 2018 and ‘what if’, and I was trying to get back at the team at the end of my career. So maybe that’s a way that we could, yeah, I say give the people what they want," Ricciardo concluded, recalling their successful two-year stint together as teammates from 2016 to 2018.
