The decision by Racing Bulls to hand Liam Lawson the seat for the remainder of the campaign brought a definitive close to the Australian's illustrious 13-year career in the sport.
Spanning over a decade at the pinnacle of motorsport, the veteran driver secured eight memorable grand prix victories that cemented his status as a fan favorite. Following his sudden exit, the 37-year-old stepped away from the public eye to return home to Australia, focusing on personal matters that had long been neglected due to the relentless demands of the global racing calendar.
Despite his trademark cheerful demeanor, the seasoned competitor admitted that accepting the reality of his situation proved to be an immensely difficult hurdle to overcome during the initial phase of his transition away from the paddock.
The first phase straight after Singapore, it was still trying to stay tall and strong, Ricciardo told the Beyond the Grid podcast. It's like a coping mechanism, or trying to outwardly project that I'm fine, it's all good, ultimately hiding from a feeling of humiliation. That was the first phase of just thinking everything was okay. But obviously, I was very, very hurt inside.
Reflecting on his turbulent post-Red Bull years, which included a challenging stint with McLaren, he confessed a sense of relief that the decision was ultimately taken out of his hands, sparing him from enduring further competitive agony on the grid.
