Collin Veijer delivered a gritty and determined performance during the intermediate class race at the Sepang International Circuit. Starting from sixth place on the grid after securing a strong second-row qualification, the young Dutch rider faced a challenging opening phase due to a lack of front-end feel with his machine, which prevented him from dictating the desired pace early on.
Throughout the opening five laps, the Red Bull KTM Ajo standout struggled to find the necessary confidence to push to the absolute limit. Opting to avoid unnecessary risks of a front-end crash, he dropped back to tenth position and lost touch with the leading group spearheaded eventual race dominator David Alonso.
The turning point arrived with six laps remaining, as the riders ahead began to struggle with their tyre degradation and overall pace. Seizing the opportunity, the talented youngster launched a series of impressive overtaking maneuvers, charging through the field to cross the finish line in seventh place, 17.705 seconds behind the race winner.
Reflecting on his rollercoaster race under the intense tropical heat of Malaysia, the rider admitted that his start was far from ideal. "The opening laps were simply not good. I didn't have the same feeling with the front end as yesterday during qualifying. I lacked the confidence to really attack and didn't want to take too many risks," Veijer explained regarding his cautious start.
Despite the difficult beginning, securing nine championship points lifted him into the top ten of the overall world championship standings. Taking the positives from his late-race surge, the squad aims to build upon these valuable lessons for the upcoming rounds. "We were quite strong towards the end and we can take positive things from that. We have learned a lot once again and have another seventh place in the bag," he concluded.
