Chris Middlehurst Pulls Off 30 Overtakes for Stunning Walter Hayes Trophy Win

A breathtaking display of racecraft unfolded at the Walter Hayes Trophy as Chris Middlehurst executed a staggering 30 overtaking maneuvers to claim a sensational victory in the last chance race and punch his ticket to the semi-finals.

Earlier in the day, the Team Dolan driver had triumphed in the progression race, a result that nonetheless left him starting way back in 19th position on the grid for the high-stakes last chance encounter. With the asphalt still slick from early morning moisture and greasy conditions, car control became the ultimate test for the entire field.

When the lights went out, KMR Sport polesitter Mikel Bezuidenhout made a lightning start, carving out a two-car-length advantage by the opening corner. Yet, Middlehurst immediately showed his intent, storming through the pack up to seventh by Becketts before a red flag neutralised the race following an incident involving Tim Fitzgerald and Ian Campbell.

The subsequent restart forced Middlehurst back down to 17th on the grid for a 10-lap sprint. Undeterred, he launched forward once more, slashing his way up to eighth by the time the field reached the Wellington Straight.

At the front, Bezuidenhout ran deep into Brooklands, allowing his pursuers to close in. Middlehurst steadily picked off his rivals one by one, culminating in a brilliant double-pass at Maggotts on lap four that elevated him to second place. He then dove down the inside of the race leader through Luffield, securing the lead before Woodcote and pulling away to win by 3.562 seconds.

Reflecting on his remarkable drive, Middlehurst told Formula Scout, "We used the same tyres as yesterday. So I just had to finish the race and not try to take too much life out of them." Looking ahead to the next stage, he added, "I've got to come through the order in the semi-final now and try and get as high up as I can. It's not going to be easy, because I think that it's going to probably be a drier line and then grease off the circuit which makes overtaking a bit more difficult."
