Chip Ganassi will pay tribute to racing legend Alex Zanardi by running a special livery at Laguna Seca, the final round of the 2026 IndyCar season. The design draws inspiration from the car that carried Zanardi to two consecutive championships in 1997 and 1998.
The No. 10 entry, driven by Alex Palou, will feature the iconic yellow lightning bolt associated with Zanardi's late-90s dominance. The timing is deliberate: it marks 30 years since one of the most spectacular moves in motorsport history unfolded at this very track.
Back in 1996, Zanardi pulled off an unforgettable overtake at the famous Corkscrew corner, passing Bryan Herta on the final lap to snatch victory. That bold maneuver not only secured the win but also earned him Rookie of the Year honors, setting the stage for his two title-winning seasons.
Zanardi's career was tragically cut short after a severe crash at Lausitzring in 2001, resulting in the loss of both legs. Yet his fighting spirit never wavered; he went on to claim four gold medals in handbike at the Paralympic Games before passing away in May 2025 following a training accident two years earlier.
Alex Palou, chasing his fifth title, admitted the tribute carries deep meaning. “I’m thrilled to see the bolt back on our car. We race in memory of Alex Zanardi. Laguna Seca is his place, his corner. And it also happens to be the 30th anniversary of CGR's first IndyCar title with Honda. So we're bringing it all together for the fans, but also for ourselves. Hopefully it’ll be a great race for the No. 10 DHL car,” he said.
With all these elements converging, the team hopes next weekend at Laguna Seca will serve as a fitting celebration of a legend and a milestone moment in the team's storied history in American open-wheel racing.
