Charles Leclerc Wins British GP After Antonelli Drama

Charles Leclerc won the British GP 2026 at Silverstone after late-race drama ended Kimi Antonelli’s pressure and left the race finishing behind the safety car.

Leclerc made a strong launch and immediately took the lead from Antonelli, while Lewis Hamilton moved into second in the opening phase. Antonelli dropped to third but stayed within range of Ferrari before attacking Hamilton and reclaiming second place on Lap 11.

The race began to shift when Hamilton received a five-second penalty for a false start. He had to serve the punishment at his pit stop, losing effective track position and allowing Antonelli to lead temporarily after Leclerc stopped on Lap 25.

However, Antonelli’s victory challenge collapsed when his Mercedes suffered damage to the front left wheel shield. The issue cost him time both in the pits and on track, before a track-limits penalty ultimately dropped him out of the points after he had initially finished inside the top 10.

Leclerc had been in control with a large advantage over Hamilton, but Max Verstappen’s off at Stowe on Lap 48 triggered a safety car. Ferrari then pitted both Leclerc and Hamilton for soft tyres, while George Russell stayed out and took second place.

The safety car was expected to come in before the final lap, but it remained on track until the finish. That secured Leclerc’s victory for Ferrari, ahead of Russell and Hamilton, with Lando Norris and Isack Hadjar completing the top five.

The result was a significant win for Leclerc because it came through a race shaped by pit strategy, a start penalty, Mercedes technical trouble, and the late safety car procedure. With Antonelli dropping to 16th through his penalty, the British GP 2026 carries major points implications heading into the next round.
