The MotoGP championship concluded its historic era at Phillip Island under anticlimactic circumstances after the final race was called off due to severe weather conditions affecting the medical helicopter's visibility. Poor visibility forced race direction and series executives to make the difficult safety-first decision to cancel Sunday's main event.

Despite missing out on the competitive Grand Prix action, riders still participated in a poignant farewell lap behind the safety car, acknowledging the massive crowd that had gathered for the venue's emotional finale by the Bass Strait. Carmelo Ezpeleta addressed the cancellation and the profound significance of the circuit in an official statement following the event.

The premier class CEO emphasized that very few sporting venues around the globe manage to intertwine themselves so deeply with the core identity of a worldwide racing series. Having hosted world championship motorcycle events since 1989, the fast and flowing layout has consistently tested generations of elite athletes.

"There are very few sports facilities in the world that become part of the identity of a championship. Phillip Island is one of them," Ezpeleta stated. He highlighted how the unique combination of the layout, passionate crowds, and breathtaking seaside scenery created moments that are permanently etched into the sport's history books.

Ezpeleta also paid tribute to the legendary Australian riders who shaped the sport's rich heritage, from Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan to Casey Stoner and modern stars like Jack Miller. Their contributions inspired global audiences and set high standards for future generations entering the world championship.

Looking ahead, Ezpeleta shifted focus toward the future transition to Adelaide, expressing optimism that the upcoming relocation will introduce the premier motorcycle championship to an even wider audience while maintaining the deep-rooted passion of Australian motorsport fans.
