The Formula 1 paddock is once again buzzing with intense discussions after former Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz openly revealed the dark side and immense mental pressure he endured while racing for the iconic Italian outfit. Amidst mounting scrutiny following internal friction between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Sainz's past experience sheds light on the toxic atmosphere often cultivated by hardcore fanbase segments.

Speaking to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the current Williams driver admitted that the hardest part of his tenure in red wasn't just battling on track against his teammate, but rather managing the expectations of local media and the overwhelming hostility from extreme supporters. The situation inside the garage was heavily polarized, forcing Sainz to cope with harsh criticisms whenever he failed to conform to external expectations.

"The most difficult thing during my time with Ferrari was managing the environment, the relationship with the media, and above all with the fans. The situation between Charles and me was very polarized. I remember suffering because of his most extreme fans who insulted me or wished me bad things. Even some Italian media criticized me for not acting enough like a second driver," Sainz recalled regarding his tenure in Maranello.

Despite facing grueling psychological pressure, Sainz emphasized that his professional and personal relationship with Leclerc remained respectful. He noted that any heated on-track battles or tension were always resolved maturely through direct conversations on the very same evening without letting grievances linger.

"The real problem revolved more around the pressure that surrounds Ferrari, rather than genuine difficulties between Charles and me. Every conflict was resolved the same evening. We always spoke calmly and managed to find a solution to move forward. And even today the relationship between the two of us is good," the Spanish driver clarified.

Sainz's candid remarks serve as a reminder of the complex challenge teams face when fielding two elite drivers aiming for glory. Addressing the classic conundrum of managing dual top-tier talents, Sainz stated that friction is an inevitable reality in any top-tier motorsport operation.

"I cannot remember a team that had two good drivers fighting for the top positions without any problems arising. You can either immediately designate a driver as number two or have two competitive drivers. But that is how it is," he concluded.
