Speculation continues to surround the future of Valtteri Bottas at Cadillac Racing as the team navigates a complex driver market in Formula 1. The United States Grand Prix weekend naturally directed the spotlight toward the American-owned outfit, leading to some awkward questions regarding their long-term line-up plans for 2027 and beyond.
Both Bottas and his experienced teammate, Sergio Perez, are tied to multi-year agreements structured as one-plus-one arrangements, where the second year remains optional based on specific performance criteria. Due to a noticeable performance gap between the two drivers, Bottas's position within the squad has fueled paddock gossip for months.
Recently appointed team principal Marcin Budkowski has already been forced to manage mounting media pressure, much like his predecessor Graeme Lowdon before him. However, a rather peculiar moment during the official FIA press conference in Austin hinted that Cadillac's driver strategy might not be as finalized as previously communicated.

The catalyst arrived when a broadcaster questioned the difficulty of evaluating a driver struggling at the back of the grid while outperforming his teammate, alongside a direct query regarding a potential reserve role for Esteban Ocon. In attempting to deliver a standard non-committal answer, Budkowski visibly struggled to keep his footing.
"Look, for a driver like Checo, who, as you said, has a huge amount of experience and a number of races, I can tell you he doesn’t behave or drive like a driver who is anywhere close to retirement," Budkowski explained to reporters during the briefing.
