A heated clash between Flavio Briatore and F1's high court has intensified. The Alpine boss leveled serious allegations that one of the judges in the Monaco Grand Prix appeal case had ties to McLaren, questioning the integrity of a decision that went against his team.
Briatore's Explosive Monza Outburst: Integrity Questioned
It all started with the court's decision to reinstate a penalty for Pierre Gasly following an appeal by McLaren and Red Bull. Earlier, the penalty had been rescinded after Alpine successfully exercised its right of review.
The perceived injustice sparked Briatore's fury. In an explosive press conference at the Italian Grand Prix, he alleged that one of the judges had links to McLaren, creating a serious conflict of interest.
The judge in question is Filippo Marchino, former CEO of the One Drop Foundation, a charity founded by Guy Laliberte. The charity was once gifted McLaren road cars by the late McLaren shareholder Mansour Ojjeh, intended for auction to raise funds.
FIA Responds: Procedures Followed to Highest Standards
In response, the FIA's International Court of Appeal (ICA) issued a statement. They emphasized that the appointment of judges in this case followed applicable judicial procedures and standard practice, inspired by the highest standards like the IBA Guidelines on Conflicts of Interest.
The ICA also clarified that all judges are elected by the FIA General Assemblies, some upon proposal by at least five F1 teams in accordance with FIA statutes. They asserted the independence and impartiality of the judges in deciding this case.
This statement aims to defuse tensions, yet questions about transparency in motorsport decision-making remain. Will this set a precedent for stricter oversight of F1's judicial integrity?
