Formula 1, Sportrik Media - FIA has officially confirmed a series of regulatory changes to the 2026 Formula 1 cars following a critical meeting with F1 and stakeholders on April 20.

The review took place during the April break in response to widespread criticism from drivers and fans regarding the new generation of cars, particularly around energy management in qualifying, overtaking dynamics, and safety concerns linked to speed differentials.

The outcome of the meeting outlines changes across four key areas: qualifying, race conditions, wet weather, and race starts. All measures are set to be introduced ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, subject to approval by the World Motor Sport Council.

In qualifying, adjustments have been made to energy management parameters. The maximum permitted recharge has been reduced from 8MJ to 7MJ to limit excessive energy harvesting and encourage more consistent flat-out driving. Additionally, peak superclip power has been increased from 250 kW to 350 kW, reducing recharge time and easing driver workload.

The number of events allowed to operate under alternative lower energy limits has also been expanded from eight to twelve races, enabling greater flexibility based on circuit characteristics.

For race conditions, the maximum boost power is now capped at +150 kW to limit sudden performance spikes. MGU-K deployment will remain at 350 kW in key acceleration zones, such as corner exits and overtaking areas, but will be restricted to 250 kW elsewhere on the lap. These changes aim to reduce excessive closing speeds while preserving overtaking opportunities.

In wet conditions, tyre blanket temperatures for intermediate tyres have been increased following driver feedback to improve initial grip. Maximum ERS deployment will also be reduced to limit torque and enhance vehicle control in low-grip situations.

Rear light systems have been simplified to provide clearer and more consistent visual signals, improving visibility and reaction times for drivers in poor weather conditions.

Changes to race start procedures have also been agreed, although these will be tested during the Miami Grand Prix before full implementation. A new “low power start detection” system will identify cars with abnormal acceleration immediately after clutch release.

If triggered, an automatic MGU-K deployment will ensure a minimum level of acceleration, reducing the risk of incidents without offering a competitive advantage. A corresponding visual warning system, using flashing rear and side lights, will alert following drivers.

Additionally, the energy counter will now reset at the start of the formation lap to address a previously identified system inconsistency.

These regulatory updates reflect the joint effort by FIA and Formula 1 to balance performance, safety, and racing quality under the new technical framework. The Miami Grand Prix will serve as the first real-world test of these changes as the 2026 season continues to evolve.
