Gabriel Bortoleto has spoken out about Audi's decision to appeal the non-penalty for Yuki Tsunoda's grid infringement at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. The Brazilian driver made it clear that his team is simply seeking justice in accordance with the regulations.
The incident occurred when Tsunoda pulled onto the Monza grid out of position, forcing an extra formation lap. Audi expected Racing Bulls to start from the pit lane, but the Japanese driver was instead allowed to take his P17 slot. From there, Tsunoda charged to 10th, taking the final points position, while Bortoleto battled in the lower midfield without scoring.
Speaking at the FIA press conference on Thursday, Bortoleto outlined Audi's stance. "I think it's quite straightforward in the rules," he said. "When a driver causes an extra formation lap, he must start from the pit lane, and in that case, Yuki didn't. So, I think that's the reason why Audi is appealing. We are appealing the results. For us, it counts as a point if we get the position, so every point counts. What's right is right at the end of the day."
The appeal is not without risk. Audi has the right to challenge the result, but success is far from guaranteed. The FIA has strict procedures for such protests, and Racing Bulls will likely argue that the stewards' decision is final. Nevertheless, for a team building its foundations like Audi, fighting for every point is part of the championship mentality they aim to instil.
Amid the controversy, Bortoleto also turned his attention to F1's newest track, the Madring. He expressed enthusiasm for the challenging circuit. "It's a very challenging track," he said. "A lot of blind corners and banking, up and down. It's going to be interesting to see how we adapt as drivers, and also set up our car. But I'm optimistic. The track, at least in the simulator, was very cool to drive, lots of combined braking. That's the type of track I like. So, looking forward to heading to the track tomorrow."
With the appeal ongoing, Bortoleto and Audi find themselves at a crossroads between pursuing justice and accepting reality. But one thing is certain: for the young driver, every point and every decision carries significant weight in his F1 journey.
