Marco Bezzecchi remains adamant he can still fight for the 2026 MotoGP title despite a devastating blow at Misano. The Aprilia Racing rider crashed out of the lead at Turn 13 on the opening lap of the San Marino Grand Prix last Sunday, moments after storming to a record-breaking pole position.
The mistake not only cost him a likely victory but also saw him lose significant ground to rivals. He now trails joint championship leaders Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin by 33 points with eight rounds remaining. Just after the Italian Grand Prix, Bezzecchi led the standings by 17 points – a 50-point swing in a matter of races.
Asked on the eve of the Austrian Grand Prix whether he can beat Marquez and Martin, Bezzecchi said, "Well, it's a big gap, but it's also not crazy. Now with the format we have, the possibility to gain or lose points is a little bit bigger. Obviously, Marc is a tough rival. So at the end it's not easy, but at the moment honestly my target is to try to get back to my consistency."
Consistency has been the missing piece. Before his injury at Sachsenring, Bezzecchi was super consistent, but then started making too many mistakes. After a solid comeback, Misano marked another error. "I analysed the data and everything. I tried to understand what I did wrong in all the details. Looking at the data at the end is painful, but it gives you the chance to understand the details," he explained.
Misano was the fifth time in seven grands prix that Bezzecchi failed to score points on Sunday, whether due to mistakes, injury or a ban. That is a worrying trend for a rider known for his raw speed. The question remains: can he truly challenge Marquez and Martin until the end?
Bezzecchi, however, is not throwing in the towel. "My target is to try to come back with my consistency. Then, once I reach my target, I will try my best to be competitive and try to be in the fight until the end," he insisted. With eight races left, the door is still open, but he must stop the mistakes to stay in the hunt.
The 2026 MotoGP season is far from over, but time is ticking. Bezzecchi must prove he has the mental maturity to match his speed. Otherwise, the title will slip further away.
