Marco Bezzecchi suffered a heartbreaking crash at the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix 2026. The Aprilia Racing rider fell while leading the race at the Misano Circuit on Sunday (13/9). The incident dealt a severe blow to his title aspirations.
Bezzecchi started from pole after setting a record-breaking lap in qualifying. He successfully defended the lead from Marc Marquez at Turn 1. However, before completing a full lap, he lost control of his RS-GP at Turn 13 and slid into the gravel. This failure was a major setback for the Italian rider.
With eight races remaining, Bezzecchi now trails joint championship leaders Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin by 33 points. This mistake adds to a list of inconsistencies in his title challenge. Nevertheless, he denied suggestions that he put too much pressure on himself in his home race.
“Obviously, my speed is a good thing. A very good qualifying, a very good sprint and an improved start compared to yesterday,” Bezzecchi said. “Now, it hurts a lot, it's undeniable. But unfortunately things are the way they are now and we shouldn't focus too much on the negatives, but on the positive things. Fortunately, we have Austria soon, so we try to work these few days at home.”
Bezzecchi had previously claimed a sensational win at the Italian Grand Prix in May, one of the most monumental moments of his career. Returning to his home turf, expectations were high for him to repeat his Mugello result and put up a stronger fight against Ducati in the title race. Asked if he put too much pressure on himself at Misano, Bezzecchi replied with a resounding “no”.
He explained the cause of the crash: “Everything was going, but I made a mistake at turn 13 and I lost the front. When you have a full fuel tank, you have to manage the braking point a little bit better. I had a bit of a shaking in the fast part, so when I braked I didn't close the line perfectly and unfortunately I lost the front.”
