Marco Bezzecchi emerged as the fastest rider on Friday at the Aragon GP, impressing many despite his ongoing knee injury. His lap time even broke the track record, outpacing the weekend's main favorite, Marc Marquez, who had to settle for third. However, the Italian rider refused to get carried away. He is well aware that Marquez hasn't shown his full potential yet, and Saturday could change everything.
“I didn't expect to be this fast. It's a good day, I'm happy. It's true that Marc did a time attack alone, so stay calm. It's only Friday, but it was important to start well. I was okay this morning and we worked well between sessions. This afternoon was also quite good. In terms of riding style, I'm still making too many small mistakes that, when combined, are not effective. Physically, the shoulder isn't too bad, but the knee is still quite bothersome. Here there are many left-hand corners, so the pain is felt. I don't like to complain, but that's the reality,” Bezzecchi said, as reported by Motosan.es.
One of Bezzecchi's weak points this weekend is Sector 1, where he struggles to find rhythm. “T1 is a difficult sector, there are two fast corners, corners 2 and 3. Corner 3 is probably the most difficult. Then you have to carry high speed through corners 4-5, and in the left-handers Marc is very strong. I struggle with the direction change between corners 3 and 4. In the left-hand part, with my knee, I lose a lot. There, if you can't put extra force on the bike, you lose a bit of time: you run wide, not incisive, not precise. But it happens in many points, not just T1. Although in T1 you also need to take more risk,” he added.
The knee injury forces him to manage his energy wisely. “I was somewhat forced to do it at Silverstone and here too. Hopefully I can get back to normal soon. I don't want to talk about others' conditions, but I have to manage myself,” explained the Ducati rider.
Regarding his chances this weekend, Bezzecchi declined to speculate. “I don't know. Today is only Friday, and I'm sure many are saving their best. So it's important to start like this, start well. But tomorrow everyone will show their cards, and we'll understand the situation better,” he said.
He also stressed that his goal is not just to beat Marquez or become the first Aprilia rider to win at Motorland. “That's not my goal. My goal is different: to get back to winning ways. That's what matters most,” Bezzecchi concluded.
