Pecco Bagnaia has defended Johann Zarco following the major restart crash at the 2026 Catalan MotoGP which left the LCR Honda rider with serious ligament injuries. Bagnaia insisted Zarco made no obvious mistake entering Turn 1 and suggested there may have been an issue with the French rider's Honda during the braking phase.
The incident began during the second restart of the Catalunya grand prix when Zarco launched from fifth on the grid. Under acceleration towards Turn 1, the LCR Honda rider was overtaken by factory Honda duo Joan Mir and Luca Marini. Zarco then appeared to brake earlier than the surrounding riders before losing control behind Marini's machine.
Bagnaia, who restarted from 10th position, managed to pass Zarco around the outside under braking. Moments later, however, Zarco appeared unsettled by the dirty air coming from Marini's Honda before clipping the rear of the Italian rider's bike. Zarco crashed into Bagnaia while his sliding motorcycle also collected Marini and sent all three riders into the gravel trap.

"During the second restart, honestly I expected everyone to be calmer under braking. But after watching the incident again, Zarco didn't do anything wrong," Bagnaia explained in Ducati's Inside Ducati video.
"Something strange happened with his bike. He started braking earlier but the bike didn't slow down properly, so something clearly happened there."
The Catalunya crash immediately became one of the most alarming accidents of the 2026 MotoGP season because Zarco's leg became trapped on Bagnaia's Ducati while both riders slid through the gravel. Bagnaia and Marini instantly rushed to help Zarco before medical staff arrived at the scene.
Bagnaia admitted the impact he suffered was extremely violent, but said Zarco's condition quickly became his main concern after the crash. The Ducati Lenovo rider could immediately see the pain Zarco was experiencing because of the damage to his leg and ligaments.
"The impact with the ground was huge and very intense. But as soon as I saw him attached to my bike and saw his leg and the pain he was in, it had a big emotional impact on me," Bagnaia added.
Zarco was later diagnosed with significant ligament damage and is expected to undergo surgery. MotoGP stewards also opened an investigation into the crash for potentially causing a dangerous situation, although the official hearing has been postponed until Zarco is available to participate.
The French rider himself admitted he regretted taking part in the second restart after previously being struck by debris from the earlier accident involving Alex Marquez. Zarco explained that he became trapped in Marini's slipstream and was unable to stop the bike in time to avoid contact.
"I'm mad at myself for taking the second restart. I got sucked into Marini and couldn't stop the bike in time to avoid him," Zarco told L'Equipe.
The Catalunya incident has once again intensified discussions regarding MotoGP restart safety, particularly during the opening braking zones where aerodynamic turbulence and braking loads have become increasingly aggressive in the modern MotoGP era. With Mugello next on the calendar, the physical condition of both Zarco and Bagnaia is expected to remain a major talking point throughout the paddock.
