Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Ayrton Senna’s first Formula 1 car, the Toleman TG183B from the 1984 season, is set to go under the hammer in Monaco, marking a significant moment in motorsport heritage.
The chassis TG183B-05 will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s with an estimated value ranging between €2.8 million and €3.8 million. The valuation reflects the historical importance of the car that represents the starting point of one of Formula 1’s most iconic careers.
Ayrton Senna competed with this chassis in four races during the opening phase of the 1984 season, including his debut at Rio de Janeiro and his first championship point with a sixth-place finish at Kyalami. That result marked the beginning of a career that would ultimately yield 614 world championship points.
The car will be auctioned on 25 April at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, coinciding with the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. The event is expected to attract significant global interest from collectors due to the car’s provenance and technical heritage.
Senna’s arrival in Formula 1 came under challenging circumstances. Despite dominating the 1983 British Formula 3 Championship and earning test opportunities with McLaren, Williams, and Brabham, he was unable to secure an immediate race seat with a front-running team.
That opportunity emerged with Toleman, a team transitioning from Formula 2 success into Formula 1 competition. During the early part of the 1984 season, Senna and team-mate Johnny Cecotto raced the updated TG183B before the introduction of the newer TG184.
The TG183B-05 chassis was newly constructed for Senna and designed by Rory Byrne alongside John Gentry. The car featured distinctive engineering solutions, including front wing-mounted radiators and a twin rear wing configuration, powered by a Hart 415T 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a Holset turbocharger.
Senna’s debut at Interlagos ended prematurely due to a turbocharger failure on lap eight. However, his performance at Kyalami demonstrated immediate potential, recovering from 13th on the grid to finish sixth despite sustaining front wing damage on the opening lap.
He also delivered a strong drive at Zolder, initially finishing seventh before being promoted to sixth following the disqualification of Tyrrell from the championship due to technical infringements.
The final competitive appearance of this chassis came at Imola, amid a breakdown in relations between Toleman and tyre supplier Pirelli. The dispute led to the team withdrawing from Friday running, marking an abrupt end to the chassis’ front-line involvement.
With its technical significance and direct link to the early career of Ayrton Senna, the TG183B-05 stands as a landmark piece of Formula 1 history. The Monaco auction is set to underline its enduring value, both as a collector’s asset and as a symbol of a defining era in the sport.
