Nico Hulkenberg earned praise from Audi boss Allan McNish after expertly avoiding an incident during the opening lap of the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix with a 'bloody good save'.
The first lap at Zandvoort was full of drama, with Max Verstappen sensationally crashing out at the final corner.
Gabriel Bortoleto lost control, spun, and created a smokescreen, plunging the cars behind into its path. Hulkenberg, closely behind, reacted instinctively, choosing to go left to avoid a side collision despite limited visibility.
The potential crash was missed, and both drivers continued without incident. Bortoleto managed to keep his car out of the wall and rejoin the race.
Allan McNish, Audi's Racing Director, reflected on the incident to media, including Motorsport Week, praising both drivers. "I watch their two onboards and am live every second with them, which is why I'm turning grey very quickly at times," he joked. "There are two factors. One, when something's happening ahead of you, there is a mental process, but there's also an instinct, and it's an instinctive knowing where to go and what to do. And some people have got it, some people don't. When the car starts to spin, it goes in a particular direction, and it's a trajectory. Then there's an element of instinctive judgment: how far do you go in which direction? Certainly, with a car on a banking, that's different, as they tend to go up rather than down. That's why I was impressed with Gabriel for keeping it in the middle of the circuit and not spooning into the wall. But without doubt, whether it was instinct or skill, it was a bloody good save."
Hulkenberg has had standout moments throughout his career, and his quick reflexes in detrimental situations remain one of his most exceptional talents.
