Audi has officially followed through with its intention to appeal the result of the Italian Grand Prix involving Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda. The German team is unhappy with the FIA stewards' decision not to penalize Tsunoda for causing an extra formation lap at Monza.
The incident occurred before the race start when Tsunoda triggered an additional formation lap. Race director Rui Marques deemed the Japanese driver's starting position unsatisfactory as his car was angled towards the pit wall. The FIA decided to abort the start and called for an extra formation lap. However, after the race, the stewards opted not to give Tsunoda the customary stop-and-go penalty, which would have been converted into a 30-second time penalty.
According to Article B5.9.4 of the 2026 F1 sporting regulations, any driver who causes an extra formation lap must enter the pit lane at the end of the lap and start from the end of the pit lane. However, Racing Bulls argued that Tsunoda did not leave his grid slot and did not impact other competitors. Race director Marques explained he acted out of an abundance of caution. Consequently, the team was not notified by race control that Tsunoda was the cause, so it had no reason to instruct its driver to start from the pit exit.
The stewards agreed with that interpretation, but Audi immediately lodged an intention to appeal. The team felt aggrieved because Gabriel Bortoleto finished 11th, one position behind Tsunoda, and would be promoted into a points-paying position if the appeal succeeds. Audi utilized the 96-hour window after the race to study the rulebook and build a case. That window closed on Thursday night, and sources confirmed Audi will proceed with the appeal.
Audi believes the rulebook is black and white: drivers causing an extra formation lap must be penalized. There is an argument that since the race director deemed Tsunoda's starting position sufficient to abort the start, Tsunoda should have started from the pit lane regardless. Whether or not the appeal overturns the decision, Audi is keen to get clarification from the stewards for future occasions. The FIA has yet to set a date for the appeal hearing.
Audi's move underscores the team's commitment to enforcing regulations and opens a broader discussion about consistency in Formula 1. Fans await the final outcome of the appeal, which could affect the drivers' championship standings.
