Aprilia Racing has confirmed it will not deviate from its 850cc development programme for the 2027 regulations, despite holding a strong position in the 2026 MotoGP title race. The decision places the Noale-based manufacturer in a technically demanding scenario, balancing immediate performance objectives with long-term engineering commitments.
Technical director Fabiano Sterlacchini stated that the development roadmap was defined at the start of the season, including resource allocation between the current 1000cc machine and the future 850cc project, which will introduce tyres from Pirelli. He emphasised that the team’s stronger-than-expected performance this season would not alter its structured technical plan.
This approach follows Aprilia’s first defeat of the season at Jerez, where Alex Marquez secured victory for Gresini Ducati. Despite that result, Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin continue to lead the riders’ standings. Bezzecchi holds an 11-point advantage over Martin and maintains a clear margin over the leading Ducati challenger, underlining the RS-GP’s consistency across varying race conditions.

From a technical perspective, Aprilia’s competitiveness in 2026 is closely linked to improvements in aerodynamic efficiency and power delivery characteristics. The RS-GP has demonstrated stronger acceleration out of corners, supported by refined traction control systems and more predictable torque application. Additionally, adaptive setup configurations have allowed the team to better manage Michelin tyre degradation over race distance, contributing to sustained performance levels.
However, parallel development of the 850cc prototype introduces significant engineering challenges. The upcoming regulation shift requires fundamental redesigns, particularly in engine architecture, aerodynamic balance, and overall efficiency. Early track testing conducted by Lorenzo Savadori at Jerez provided initial validation data, although further analysis will be required to align the concept with competitive benchmarks.
At the same time, Aprilia continued refining its 2026 package during the post-race Jerez test, securing a clean sweep of the top three positions. This result highlights the team’s ability to maintain development momentum without compromising current performance. It also reinforces Aprilia’s leadership in both the constructors’ and teams’ standings, strengthening its bid for a first premier-class title.
With multiple rounds remaining, the effectiveness of Aprilia’s dual-development strategy will be critical. The team must sustain its competitive edge against Ducati and other manufacturers while ensuring that long-term investments do not dilute short-term results. Attention now shifts to the next round, where execution, technical refinement, and strategic precision will continue to define the championship battle.
