Andrea Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 world championship by winning the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday. The 20-year-old completed the 57-lap race with a 1.5-second margin over Max Verstappen, while Lando Norris had to settle for third.

Race Story: VSC Drama and Norris's Pit Stop

Norris, who started from pole, looked on course for victory until an incident on Lap 15. Lance Stroll stopped, triggering a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). The golden opportunity to pit opened up, but Norris missed it. McLaren called him in the next lap, just as racing resumed. A slow pit stop compounded the setback, forcing the British driver to fight from behind.

Nevertheless, Norris bounced back with incredible late-race pace. He pressured Verstappen and Antonelli but couldn't find a way past. Verstappen admitted he struggled with race pace and considered second place a great result. "Looking at our race pace, it's a great result. We know Lando was unlucky with that VSC. So P2 is incredible," he said.

Ferrari's Strategy and Leclerc's Performance

Charles Leclerc led much of the race after starting on hard tyres. Ferrari extended Leclerc's stint, hoping for a Safety Car that never came. The strategy ultimately left the Monegasque fourth, ahead of George Russell. Ferrari's decision came under scrutiny, as they sacrificed track position for an opportunity that didn't materialize.

Eighth Win and Championship Standings

For Antonelli, this was his eighth win of the season. He now leads Russell by 81 points in the drivers' standings. Lewis Hamilton fell further behind after retiring early with a brake issue, 101 points adrift. With nine races remaining, the gap is equivalent to more than three race wins.

However, Antonelli refused to think about the title. "That's exactly what I don't want to do," he said. "I want to keep pushing race by race. Keep delivering and enjoying every moment. We'll see where we end up at the end of the year."

Behind the top three, Liam Lawson secured his best result for Red Bull in sixth. Franco Colapinto held off Oscar Piastri for seventh. Piastri had a difficult race after damage from a first-lap collision with Russell, and couldn't pass Colapinto in the closing stages. Arvid Lindblad added points for Racing Bulls in ninth, while Nico Hulkenberg completed the top ten for Audi.

This victory further solidifies Antonelli's position at the top of the standings, but he remains humble. "Today is good to win, but it doesn't feel as good because I think Lando deserved the win. But overall we'll take it," he concluded.
