Kimi Antonelli delivered a stunning performance to win the Italian Grand Prix in front of his home crowd, starting from 19th on the grid and taking the chequered flag first. The race, which featured an early heavy crash and intense battles up and down the field, ended in the best possible way for the Mercedes driver. But not everyone left Monza with a smile.
Antonelli was undoubtedly the star of the day. While there are caveats—he actually took victory from 12th on the restart grid, not 19th, and benefited from a Virtual Safety Car period that gave him a free pit stop—his drive was still hugely impressive. He looked dominant, decisive, and like an inevitable winner once he had carved his way into the leading pack just two laps after the restart. With this kind of form, it's hard to see anyone stopping his title charge this season.
Ferrari, on the other hand, were the biggest losers. The Italian team could only manage sixth place with Lewis Hamilton, while Charles Leclerc retired from the race. At their home circuit, Ferrari were far from convincing. The first-corner clash between Leclerc and Hamilton was a public embarrassment, and they were also unlucky with the VSC timing, which didn't give Hamilton the same strategic advantage as his rivals. Leclerc is surely devastated, while Hamilton is openly frustrated, accusing his team of having "no rules" and putting increasing pressure on team principal Fred Vasseur.
Max Verstappen was another winner, finishing third. Although he was never a genuine contender for victory, he showed tremendous grit, especially in his battle with Oscar Piastri. This result was far better than many had predicted, including us at The Race. Verstappen looked back in his element, fighting at the sharp end of the field, something we haven't seen much of this season.
George Russell, despite finishing second, could count himself unlucky. Without the mid-race VSC, he might have won, but fortune favoured Antonelli and Verstappen instead. Russell led for much of the race but a strategic misstep cost him a real shot at victory. Still, he drove solidly and showed promising pace.
The race at Monza once again proved that Formula 1 is full of surprises. Antonelli's win was the headline, but there are many other stories worth telling. Ferrari need to regroup quickly, while Mercedes and Red Bull are showing signs of progress. The season is still long, and the competition is only getting fiercer.
