Andrea Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive form by setting the fastest time in a disrupted final practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. The Mercedes driver edged out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.166 seconds, but the session was overshadowed by a heavy crash involving Lewis Hamilton at the final corner.
The incident brought out a lengthy delay as barriers were repaired, with the session stopped for around half an hour. Hamilton, who ignored instructions to stop his damaged Ferrari, could face FIA scrutiny for driving a significantly damaged car back to the pits. He ended the session ninth fastest, behind the second Audi of Gabriel Bortoleto.
Antonelli, the championship leader, has now topped two of the three practice sessions and looks the favourite for pole position at the new Madrid street circuit. McLaren showed encouraging pace with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in third and fourth, Piastri just 0.189s adrift. Max Verstappen was fifth in his Red Bull, while George Russell could only manage sixth in the second Mercedes, ahead of Liam Lawson and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg.
The session ended under a red flag after Ollie Bearman suffered a big crash at Turn 11, leaving his Haas team with a massive rebuild before qualifying. Williams also faces a race against time to fix Alex Albon's car after he glanced the barriers at Turn 21 early in FP3 and did not re-emerge. With the grid order set to be decided later today, the stage is set for a thrilling qualifying session.
