Antonelli Takes Maiden Spanish Win as Norris Suffers Bad Luck
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Antonelli now has an 81-point lead in the drivers’ standings

Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his first-ever win on Spanish soil, while Lando Norris was left to rue his misfortune. The inaugural race at the Madring circuit witnessed how the young Mercedes driver turned pressure into a victory.

Antonelli, who started from second on the grid, briefly lost position to Lando Norris who began from pole. However, a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) that arrived at an inopportune moment for Norris turned out to be a blessing for Antonelli. The Italian seized the lead and never looked back until the chequered flag fell.

This win is Antonelli's seventh of the season, further solidifying his position at the top of the drivers' standings. He now leads teammate George Russell by 81 points ahead of the Baku race. Despite the victory, Antonelli admitted his performance was far from flawless, especially when he ran wide at Turns 1 and 5. Yet, fortune seemed to favor him.

Meanwhile, George Russell once again struggled to match Antonelli's pace. Starting from sixth, he fought hard and eventually finished fifth. Russell engaged in a fierce battle with Charles Leclerc but failed to capitalize on an undercut strategy as Leclerc extended his stint. This result further distances him from the title fight.

Max Verstappen had to settle for second after spending the race trying to pressure Antonelli. The Red Bull driver started third and closed in during the final 10 laps when Antonelli encountered traffic and graining. However, once Leclerc pitted, Antonelli had clear air and Verstappen could not mount a challenge. This is Verstappen's sixth podium of the season, highlighting his consistency despite not yet winning.

On the other hand, Lando Norris was left disappointed after losing the win due to the ill-timed VSC. He had led the race before the incident but ultimately had to settle for second. Norris's frustration was palpable, given his strong pace throughout the weekend.

The Madring race also served as a learning experience for teams adapting to the 2026 regulations. The new circuit challenges drivers with a mix of fast and slow corners, and the asphalt characteristics make tire management crucial. Strategy proved decisive, as seen in Ferrari's call to extend Leclerc's stint, which held off Russell.

With this result, Antonelli edges closer to his first world title. However, with many races remaining, the battle is far from over. Verstappen and Norris still have a chance to catch up, while Russell must rebound quickly to stay in contention. The Baku race will be the next test.
