Kimi Antonelli has one hand on the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' crown after a dominant win at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Mercedes youngster leads George Russell by 81 points, Lewis Hamilton by 101, and Lando Norris by 106 with 14 races remaining. The question on everyone's mind: is there any drama left this season?
Statistically, Antonelli's advantage is nearly insurmountable. The largest deficit ever overturned in F1 history was 46 points, faced by Max Verstappen in 2022—but that was after just three races. That year, Verstappen cruised to the title. Meanwhile, James Hunt's legendary 1976 comeback, where he erased a 35-point gap to Niki Lauda, equates to roughly 97 points under today's scoring system. Antonelli's lead is even bigger than that historic turnaround.
However, the number of remaining races is uncertain. Geopolitical tensions could see the Qatar (29 November) and Abu Dhabi (6 December) grands prix cancelled, with Imola touted as a replacement finale. With eight race weekends left, Antonelli's rivals could theoretically score a maximum of 208 points—from eight wins (25 points each) plus the Singapore Sprint (8 points). But is that realistic?

Verstappen, who pulled off a stunning comeback in 2025, offered sage advice for Antonelli. "Kimi just needs to do what he's doing. It's fantastic," he said after the Spanish GP. "He shouldn't stress too much. He's delivering, confident, and gaining experience. He's still young, but he's flying and it's all working."
Verstappen also highlighted the support system around Antonelli, including his father Marco. "He shouldn't overcomplicate things. He has good people who know what he needs," Verstappen added. This calm environment has allowed Antonelli to thrive under pressure.
With consistent performances and rivals struggling to match his pace, the title seems a matter of time for Mercedes and Antonelli. But F1 history teaches us that surprises happen. Will Antonelli seal the deal early, or will his rivals fight back? All eyes are on the remainder of the season.
