Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive form by setting the fastest time in the second free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit in Madrid on Friday afternoon. The Mercedes driver clocked a 1m33.662s, beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
The session was interrupted by a crash involving Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad, who lost control at Turn 13 and hit the barriers, bringing out the red flag with 25 minutes remaining. Lindblad was unharmed.
The 5.4km Madring circuit, a mix of street sections and a permanent loop, proved challenging due to minimal runoff and high-speed corners. Teams took a conservative approach in FP1 to build confidence, and only began to push harder in FP2.
Antonelli initially led on medium tyres before Max Verstappen briefly took over. However, the Italian reclaimed the top spot and increased his pace on soft tyres. Leclerc and Hamilton were close but could not match Antonelli's time. Lindblad was an eye-catching fourth before his incident.
The crash was a setback for Racing Bulls and highlighted the difficulty of the Madring circuit. Several other drivers ran wide at Turn 17, triggering track limit offences. The session was stopped to repair the barriers, and no further improvements were made at the top.
This FP2 result confirms Antonelli and Mercedes as the early favourites for the weekend. Ferrari showed promising pace, while Red Bull and McLaren are still searching for the optimal setup. With a new circuit, qualifying and the race promise to be unpredictable.
Antonelli leads the championship standings, and a strong result in Spain would further strengthen his title bid for 2026.
