Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth win of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, but he candidly admitted that luck was on his side. The Mercedes driver capitalized on the timing of a virtual safety car (VSC) to pit from second place, while rival Lando Norris lost his chance due to a slow pit stop.
The race at the Madring circuit in Madrid was dramatic. Norris, who was leading, seemed poised for victory, but the VSC appeared at the perfect moment for Antonelli. When Norris finally pitted, the race had returned to green, and a slow stop dropped him to fifth. The McLaren driver had to settle for third after failing to overtake Antonelli and Max Verstappen.
“It’s good to win, but if I have to be realistic and honest, today we didn’t deserve to win,” Antonelli said after the race. “Lando deserved to win today, and so I think our result was probably P2 or even P3. I just didn’t do a good enough job at the start, being a bit too aggressive and then putting myself in a bad position. So yeah, definitely things to work on. But all in all, you know, today went well and I’m happy with that. But yeah, we’re just going to try to be better in Baku.”
This victory extends Antonelli’s championship lead to 81 points over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who could only finish fifth. Despite appearing unstoppable, Antonelli refuses to be distracted by thoughts of becoming F1’s youngest-ever world champion.
“That’s exactly what I don’t want to do,” he replied when asked if he’s starting to think about the title. “I want to keep pushing race by race, keep delivering and keep enjoying all the way, and then trying to do my best every race, and then we’ll see where we end up at the end of the year.”
With Mercedes’ dominant performance this season, Antonelli is firmly at the top of the standings. However, he remains humble and aware that luck also plays a part. The next race in Baku will be another test for the young Italian to prove that his consistency is not just about luck.
