Andrea Kimi Antonelli has revealed the secret behind his dominance at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 standings: it was the tough moments of his rookie season that made him mentally stronger. The young Mercedes driver now leads the championship by 59 points over teammate George Russell and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
Antonelli's performance this season is a massive leap compared to the same period last year. In 2025, he scored points in only two of nine European races and finished the season seventh with 150 points. Now, in his sophomore year, he has already secured six victories, including back-to-back wins in China and Japan that put him at the top of the standings.
In an interview with F1.com, the 20-year-old said experience is playing a huge role. "Experience is playing a massive role," he said. But more intriguing is his admission that the challenging 2025 season—with four retirements in Emilia-Romagna, Spain, Austria, and Great Britain—was the foundation of his current success.
"Last year, despite all the bad moments, the difficult periods, I think that was what I needed because it helped me grow even more than I anticipated. It made me stronger emotionally and mentally," Antonelli explained. This statement shows a maturity rarely seen in a driver his age.
Since taking the championship lead in Japan, many have wondered when the pressure of a title fight would get to Antonelli. But until the summer break, he has remained consistent. Now he heads to his home race at Monza aiming to improve on his 2025 result, despite a power unit penalty.
