Formula 1, Sportrik Media - McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has confirmed the team is working intensively to ensure the MCL40 falls below Formula 1’s new 768kg minimum weight limit for 2026. The revised regulations have reduced the threshold by 30kg from the previous 798kg baseline as part of the sport’s new technical era.

While the lighter minimum weight is expected to produce smaller, more agile cars and enhance racing quality, it presents a complex engineering challenge. With the removal of the MGU-H and structural revisions to the chassis, teams must identify further weight-saving opportunities without compromising reliability, structural integrity or aerodynamic efficiency.

Some competitors are believed to be struggling to meet the new limit, with Williams reportedly several kilograms above the threshold. Stella stressed that merely reaching 768kg is not sufficient from a performance perspective.

“Certainly, working on reducing the weight of the car is always a development item, because even if you are at the weight limit, you want to be actually under the weight limit, because then you can play with ballast,” Stella told media, including RacingNews365, during testing in Bahrain.

“So I think this is something on which the teams will keep themselves busy for a long time until they are well under the weight limit.”

McLaren also adopted a measured approach during pre-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit. Rather than introducing incremental experimental components, the reigning constructors’ champion focused on understanding its performance baseline.

“In terms of the car’s specification, what we have seen in testing is fundamentally the car that we will see in Australia,” Stella stated.

However, he confirmed that additional parts are currently being manufactured and will be introduced ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Sportrik Media analysis suggests McLaren’s disciplined strategy reflects a structural understanding of the new regulatory landscape. Achieving a car weight below the minimum limit provides strategic flexibility through ballast redistribution, enabling more precise optimisation of weight balance for different circuit characteristics.

In the early phase of a regulation cycle, such adaptability can represent a decisive competitive advantage over teams still focused on fundamental weight reduction. Furthermore, McLaren’s decision to prioritise baseline validation over aggressive experimentation indicates confidence in the MCL40’s core concept.

With the Australian Grand Prix set to serve as the first competitive benchmark of the 2026 season, McLaren’s ability to combine weight efficiency with controlled development direction will be central to maintaining its position at the front of the grid.
