Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives at the United States Grand Prix holding a commanding 102-point lead over teammate George Russell. The young Italian driver holds a mathematical chance to wrap up the Formula 1 world championship five rounds before the end of the season at the Circuit of The Americas.
Asked about the prospect on Thursday, Antonelli admitted he was doing his best not to dwell on the championship scenario. Despite sitting on the verge of motorsport history, the Mercedes rising star insists on keeping a calm head and treating the race weekend like any other normal event.
"It’s crazy if you think about it, but that’s why I won’t think about it," Antonelli said regarding the title prospect. "For me [it] needs to be a perfect weekend and the others, they need to do a poor result, which is unlikely to happen."

His only mathematical route to sealing the crown on Sunday requires a race victory, coupled with Russell finishing outside the top eight and Ferrari veteran Lewis Hamilton finishing outside the top four. Otherwise, the championship fight will inevitably extend to the next round in Mexico.
Rather than preparing for premature celebrations, Antonelli and his race engineer Peter Bonnington agreed during their Thursday meeting to simply focus on enjoying the process and extracting maximum performance from the W17 machine session by session.
