Two of the biggest names in Supercars history, Marcos Ambrose and Russell Ingall, are back in the paddock to witness GRM's wildcard debut at Bathurst 1000. Both were present at a two-day test at Winton, where the team and its drivers, Nathan Herne and James Moffat, are getting to grips with the ex-Triple Eight Gen3 Camaro. This involvement marks GRM's return to the legendary race after a six-year absence, and fan enthusiasm has been immediate.
Marcos Ambrose is embedded in GRM through a tie-up that sees two Marcos Ambrose Motorsport entries prepared by the Melbourne squad. Meanwhile, Ingall's association comes through Herne, who is finally getting his Supercars shot six years after being denied a Great Race start due to licensing restrictions. “It is good to be back,” said Ingall in a GRM video from Winton. “Big Gaz would be looking down on us having a ball. The retro livery looks absolutely fantasticg and can you believe we got the band back together?”
Ambrose and Ingall won a combined three Supercars titles while teammates at Stone Brothers Racing between 2003 and 2005. Although neither raced for GRM, both speak highly of the late Garry Rogers – who died last October, aged 80 – and his son Barry, who has taken the reins at the team. “What a tribute,” said Ambrose of a car that is testing in an eye-catching livery that harks back to Garry’s second ever race car, an EH Holden. “The car looks amazing, two great drivers for GRM driving in this year’s Bathurst 1000. I’m excited to be part of it.”
The wildcard effort returns GRM to the Bathurst 1000 for the first time in six years. GRM’s surprise comeback has been met with a wave of enthusiasm from fans of the late larrikin Rogers and his fun-loving squad. Ambrose and Ingall are both set to be on hand at Bathurst, where GRM will compete with a throwback livery to the team’s victory in the 2000 Great Race. “When it comes to Bathurst, get ready for it, because I think the GRM pit and set up will be very, very popular with the fans,” said Ingall. “I reckon there will be a lot of people coming down there.”
For Russell Ingall, this is an emotional moment after his last start in the Great Race in 2021. His presence at Winton is not only as an advisor but also as part of the effort to restore the glory of a team he once raced against. Ambrose, now more involved in the motorsport business world, still shows his passion for Australian touring car racing. This collaboration is also a proving ground for Herne and Moffat, the two drivers who will pilot the Gen3 Camaro.
