Alonso Open to Aston Martin WEC Move, Not Rushing 2027 Decision
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
2026 has been a challenging season for Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso gave a short but telling answer when asked about a potential switch to Aston Martin's World Endurance Championship (WEC) programme. Amid speculation over his Formula 1 future, the Spaniard hasn't closed the door on returning to endurance racing.

Alonso is known for his hunger for challenges. Beyond F1, he has attempted the Indy500 and won the Le Mans 24 Hours twice with Toyota. Now, with Aston Martin running a Hypercar programme through its Valkyrie, the option to return to endurance racing becomes even more appealing.

Ahead of this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, Alonso was asked if WEC could be an option for 2027. His reply was brief: "Yes." However, he stressed no quick decision is coming. Asked when fans can expect news, he said, "Not soon." The reason for the delay? "Because I think it's nice, no?"

Alonso's decision seems to hinge on next year's regulation changes. He wants to understand the impact of the new rules on racing and the driving side. "The current cars, as I've said many times, are not the best cars to drive and to enjoy. But next year there is a step in the right direction," he said. "I need to think what is the best programme for next year and sit with the team. Behind the wheel or in another role, where I will be helping the most, that will be the most important thing to decide together."

Alonso also dismissed suggestions that Aston Martin is showing impatience. Although several top drivers have committed to rival teams, he said his team has no urgency. He even acknowledged that those drivers visited Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll over the summer. "Those drivers, they were visiting Lawrence in summer. Yes, so no urgency," he said.

With his calm demeanour, Alonso appears to be in full control of the situation. He is not rushing and wants to ensure the best move, whether staying in F1 or switching to WEC. The eventual decision will be intriguing either way.
