Alonso Lopez finally returned to the top step of the podium after a long wait. The 24-year-old Spanish rider won the Moto2 Aragon Grand Prix 2026, capping off a perfect weekend that began with pole position. This victory is his first since the 2024 Qatar GP, ending a two-year winless streak.
From the lights out, Lopez took the lead, ahead of Izan Guevara and Holgado, who started second and third. He controlled the race throughout the 19 laps, maintaining his advantage with poise. Despite late pressure, he held on to take the checkered flag, greeted by euphoria from the home crowd.
Behind Lopez, a fierce battle unfolded for the remaining podium spots. In the early laps, Veijer from KTM Ajo impressed, passing Alonso and then Gonzalez to move into fourth. He continued to pressure Holgado and overtook him on lap 10, at the same time Gonzalez began to struggle after being passed by Alonso and losing sixth to Agius.
Unfortunately for Veijer, he crashed at Turn 4 with just five laps remaining, which promoted Agius to fourth. Meanwhile, Manuel Gonzalez, the championship leader, struggled throughout and had to settle for sixth after dropping as low as seventh. Despite losing points, he still holds the lead, but Lopez is now closing in.
The most thrilling moment came on the final lap, as Izan Guevara and Alonso duelled fiercely for second. Alonso attempted overtakes multiple times, but Guevara's defense was rock-solid. They swapped positions in several corners, but Guevara held on to finish ahead. Up front, Lopez benefited from their battle, pulling away to secure a comfortable win.
This victory is a statement from Lopez, who has often been consistent but unlucky. With this performance, he is set to be a serious threat for the rest of the season. Spanish fans and team alike will be proud, as two Spanish riders stood on the podium at home.
