Alice Springs Inland Dragway is set to host a season opener that promises tension from the very start. Two rounds will be decided across the August 29-30 weekend, with bonus points also up for grabs. The Desert Nationals, as this event is known, offers competitors an early chance to build crucial momentum at one of the most distinctive stops on the calendar.
For title contenders, this weekend is about more than just racing. Two rounds in one weekend plus bonus points add extra weight to every qualifying session and elimination. The pressure is immediate, as a failure here could leave them far behind in the national championship chase. Beyond that, results in Alice Springs also impact the NDRC Sportsman Championship standings, adding another layer to an already complex battle.
ANDRA CEO Tim McAvaney emphasized that the double-header format is designed to test the mentality and consistency of racers from the outset. “The Desert Nationals is always an important event in the context of the season, but having two rounds in one weekend, plus bonus points, makes it especially significant,” he said. “It gives competitors the opportunity to bank points early and build momentum straight away, but it also means there is immediate pressure to perform.”
However, Alice Springs' appeal is not just about numbers. McAvaney highlighted that the atmosphere and character of the venue make it one of the most special places in drag racing. “Alice Springs remains one of the most unique events we have on the calendar. It asks a lot of competitors to get there, but that is also part of what gives it its character. The racers who make the trip know they are part of something special,” he explained.
Interestingly, this season there is an added incentive. Competitors who race at the Desert Nationals will get free entry into the Heavy Hitters drag racing program at Red CentreNATS, which takes place the following weekend. This gives racers even more reason to make the most of their trip to the Red Centre, both for the racing and to extend their time on the track.
With a wide variety of categories, Alice Springs will feature different stories: some are launching title campaigns, some are making debuts in new categories or venues, while others are chasing milestone moments, comebacks, or just plain old-fashioned fun in the desert. “This is what you want from a weekend like this. Strong competition across the brackets, meaningful championship implications, and an event that feels important from the very first round,” McAvaney added.
The 2025 ANDRA season will be a big one, with 13 points-paying events across a mix of quarter-mile and eighth-mile facilities around the country. As the season is about to begin, McAvaney couldn't hide his enthusiasm. “We can't wait to see the season begin with the incredible energy Alice Springs Inland Dragway and the Desert Nationals are known for,” he concluded.
