Fermin Aldeguer has made a bold move during the break between the Austrian and Japanese Grands Prix. The Gresini Racing rider underwent a minor surgical procedure on Wednesday to remove one of the screws in his left leg, a remnant of the femur fracture he suffered in early January. The goal is clear: accelerate his recovery before returning to the track at the Japanese GP.
The injury occurred while he was training with a production bike at the Aspar Circuit in Valencia, ahead of MotoGP pre-season. The serious femur fracture forced doctors to insert a large nail and screws to join the bone. As a result, Aldeguer had to swallow a bitter pill: missing the entire pre-season and the season opener in Thailand.
In collaboration with Dr. Ignacio Ginebreda, Head of the Lengthening and Bone Reconstruction Unit at ICATME, Hospital Universitari Dexeus, Aldeguer decided to have one of those screws removed. The procedure was performed on an outpatient basis, allowing him to return home that afternoon to rest before flying to Japan next Monday.
This is not the first surgery he has had to undergo, and it won't be the last. The nail embedded in his bone cannot be removed until the end of the season, as that operation requires weeks of inactivity and rehabilitation. After missing the first round, the Spanish rider has opted to postpone the second surgery until after the Valencia GP and the subsequent 2026 pre-season test on December 1.
However, his leg is not the only injury Aldeguer has faced this season. At the end of June, he suffered a heavy crash at Assen that resulted in a cervical fracture. That injury forced him out of the rest of the Dutch GP weekend and the following two races in Germany and Great Britain. He returned at Aragon at the end of August.
Nevertheless, Aldeguer remains focused on his big goal: finishing the season strongly and using the winter to fully recover before his debut with VR46 as an official Ducati rider with factory equipment. He has signed a contract for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
The decision to remove the screw now is part of a long-term strategy. With adequate rest, Aldeguer hopes to perform at his best at Motegi and close the season on a high note, while ushering in a new era with Ducati's strongest satellite team.
