Fermin Aldeguer's Saturday at the Misano MotoGP started brightly with his best qualifying of the season, but the Sprint race ended in disappointment. Still, he admitted to enjoying a fierce battle with Pedro Acosta.
The Gresini Racing rider secured third in Q2, his best qualifying result so far. However, his hopes for a strong Sprint finish faded after a tough first lap left him fighting for positions and ultimately finishing eighth.
“For sure a good Saturday, maybe not the result that we wanted in the Sprint,” said Aldeguer. “One of my goals for this weekend was to improve the qualifying and we took a big step.”
His initial strategy was to follow Marco Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez. But he was overtaken by Fabio Di Giannantonio and Jorge Martin at Turn 4, which disrupted his plan, especially with tyre pressure settings designed for clear air rather than mid-pack battles.
“We did the setting, the pressure of the tyre, to have only two bikes or maybe to be alone, without slipstream; and with five or six bikes it was difficult to manage,” he explained.
Despite the setback, Aldeguer took valuable lessons from his duel with Pedro Acosta. Their fight reached its limit when they touched at Turn 9, allowing Alex Marquez to slip through.
“For sure, I enjoyed it a lot,” Aldeguer said. “Alex got two positions easy because the contact with Pedro opened a little bit of space for Alex, but it was a nice battle.”
An incident with Raul Fernandez at Turns 9 and 10 also caught his attention. Aldeguer felt Fernandez slowed him down and touched him, but race direction took no action as it was deemed within limits.
The Sprint result was not what he hoped for, but Aldeguer remains optimistic about using the data for Sunday's race. With a strong qualifying performance behind him, he is determined to bounce back and secure a better result at Misano.
