MotoGP title contender Ai Ogura has officially withdrawn from this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The Trackhouse rider's fractured thumb has not healed enough, forcing him to sit out another round and putting his championship aspirations in serious jeopardy.
Ogura sustained the injury during a motocross training crash near Tokyo two weeks ago. At the time, he was third in the riders' standings. He underwent surgery with renowned doctor Xavier Mir, but recovery has been slower than expected. The 25-year-old Japanese rider was forced to miss the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend as a result.
There was hope that Ogura could return at Misano after an X-ray examination on Tuesday. However, the results were not encouraging. Doctors treating him in Barcelona advised against racing, and the decision was made before MotoGP medical director Angel Charte could even assess him on Thursday.
With Ogura out, Trackhouse Racing will field only Raul Fernandez in the San Marino GP. Lorenzo Savadori, who stepped in at short notice for Aragon, is unavailable this weekend, leaving the team with no choice but to run a single bike.
Ogura will remain in Barcelona for treatment, with an eye on returning for the Austrian Grand Prix next week. But this setback makes his title bid significantly harder. He already trails championship leader Jorge Martin by 53 points, and missing back-to-back rounds could prove costly in the final stretch of the season.
