Senna Agius wasted no time asserting his authority in the Moto2 San Marino practice session. The Australian set a blistering 1:34.142 at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Friday afternoon, a new lap record, leading a Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP one-two ahead of teammate Manuel Gonzalez by 0.120 seconds.
The session started with incredibly tight margins. Seven riders were within a tenth of a second after the first flying laps. Ivan Ortola initially topped the timesheets before Gonzalez and David Alonso surged forward. The tension was palpable, with Misano demanding pinpoint accuracy through every corner.
Midway through, Collin Veijer threw his hat into the ring. The Dutchman had a brief excursion into the gravel but soon bounced back to set the fastest time. His reign was short-lived, however, as Agius reclaimed P1 shortly after. Veijer eventually finished fourth, just 0.241 seconds adrift, a commendable result.
Barry Baltus also impressed, clocking a 1:34.524 to secure seventh. Meanwhile, Zonta van den Goorbergh could only manage 28th with a 1:35.851, meaning he will have to navigate Q1 for a shot at Q2.
The session ended with drama as Joe Roberts and Adrian Huertas were involved in a heavy crash at Turn 11. Jose Antonio Rueda and Mario Aji also went down. Race Direction will review both incidents, and penalties remain a possibility.
This result gives Agius and his team a valuable boost ahead of qualifying. With consistent pace, they look ready to dominate the weekend. But rivals like Alonso and Veijer will not back down. The Moto2 season is heating up, and Misano is shaping up to be a battleground for supremacy.
