Dick Johnson Racing driver Brodie Kostecki has opened up about the dramatic finish that saw him nearly crash due to overwhelming emotions on the final lap. The 2023 Supercars champion admitted he was trying desperately to hold back tears after sweeping past a fuel-starved Anton De Pasquale on Mountain Straight to secure a stunning victory.
The #17 Ford Mustang had been trailing the Team 18 Chevrolet by 2.5 seconds down Conrod Straight on the penultimate lap before race-altering drama unfolded. Kostecki was alerted via team radio right at the start of the final lap that the leading car was experiencing severe fuel pressure issues and might run dry.
Recounting the chaotic moments, Kostecki explained, "I got told going into the last corner, they’re like, ‘beware, car 18 could have a fuelling issue, they could run out’. And I was like, ‘nah, it’s too good to be true’. And he runs out down Mountain Straight." Initially fearing a tactical defensive block, Kostecki soon realized his rival was genuinely out of fuel.

The path back to the front capped off a rollercoaster afternoon for the Shell V-Power squad. Having controlled the pace for the majority of the race, a slow brake change during a late pit stop had dropped the Ford driver back to fifth place, forcing an aggressive recovery charge past Will Brown and Zach Bates either side of a late Safety Car intervention.
Reflecting on the psychological weight of the final lap surge, Kostecki admitted the sheer relief nearly cost him the win. "As soon as I got by him, I almost crashed into The Cutting, because I had this euphoria of emotions over me," he said. The remarkable triumph marked a second Bathurst crown for Kostecki, cementing this milestone as the pinnacle of his motorsport career.
