Drama unfolded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as a collision on lap 47 dashed Oliver Bearman's hopes of securing vital points for his team. The talented young driver, who has become a key focal point at Haas, was forced to retire from the Mexico City Grand Prix after a clash with Nico Hülkenberg during the race restart.
The incident occurred as the field bunched up under braking for Turn 4. Hülkenberg, driving for Audi, lost critical downforce due to the "dirty air" from the cars ahead. This triggered a rear wheel lock-up that proved unavoidable, resulting in Hülkenberg tapping the rear of Bearman’s car and sending the Briton into a spin that caused terminal damage to his vehicle.
"Yeah, it was just obviously racing Lap 1 of the restart; many cars bunched up together, and I was obviously racing another car, braking into Turn 4," Hülkenberg explained to the media. "In the wake of all these cars, I just lost downforce and had a bit of a rear lock. I couldn't stop the car in time, and then gave him that shove."

Following the collision, race stewards handed Hülkenberg a 10-second time penalty. The punishment proved costly, dropping him from a potential points finish to 16th in the final classification. Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Hülkenberg took immediate responsibility and sought out Bearman and the Haas team once his media duties were concluded.
"I went after the media pen and straight away to see him and the team, and apologized to them," the 39-year-old added. "It was not intentional, and it was not ideal, obviously, to finish his race like that. But yeah, it's on me. It's part of racing; in a way, these things can easily happen, and obviously I misjudged that one a little bit."
For Bearman, this incident serves as a harsh reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Formula 1 midfield. Amidst a demanding 2026 season that requires absolute consistency, losing points due to another driver's error is a significant setback. Both drivers must now shift their focus to the upcoming round, leaving the drama of Mexico City firmly in the rearview mirror.
