MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Yamaha has become the final manufacturer on the MotoGP grid to adopt the latest aerodynamic trend, debuting “leg wings” during the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez.
The seat-mounted aerodynamic devices were first introduced by Aprilia, before being adopted by Honda, KTM, and more recently Ducati at the previous round in COTA.
The initial Yamaha version was fitted to the factory bikes of Alex Rins and Fabio Quartararo, as part of ongoing efforts to improve rear stability and airflow efficiency.
Rins confirmed that early feedback from the new aero package was encouraging, although further development work is still required to fully optimise its performance.
“I tested some rear aero, some rear wings, and we need to keep working with that, and also try it in the Jerez test on Monday. So far it was not so bad, and I will keep it for the rest of the weekend,” said Rins.
Riders from Pramac Yamaha, including Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jack Miller, are expected to evaluate the new components during the official post-race test.
The legality of leg wings had been under scrutiny ahead of the 2026 season due to potential safety concerns. However, current regulations allow their continued use at least until the end of the season.
Despite introducing the upgrade, Yamaha continues to face performance challenges, particularly with its new V4 engine project. At Jerez, wildcard rider Augusto Fernandez was the highest-placed Yamaha qualifier, outside the top 15.
However, changing conditions in the Sprint race allowed Quartararo to demonstrate progress, climbing from 17th on the grid to finish seventh in wet conditions.
Yamaha’s adoption of leg wings underlines the increasingly sophisticated aerodynamic development in MotoGP, where airflow management and rear stability are becoming critical performance differentiators across the grid.
