The World Rally Championship will test a helmet camera familiar from Formula 1 at next week's season finale, as part of its push to enhance television coverage. The move signals a new chapter in how rally action is presented to fans.
The technology was previously trialled in 2024 with Italian helmet manufacturer Stilo, which developed a prototype. However, drivers have only used helmet cameras in pre-event testing; their use during rallies has not been permitted until now. That could soon change.
In Sardinia, WRC will conduct a live test using an integrated helmet camera made by Bell Racing Helmets. The camera has been approved by the FIA and uses the same technology as Formula 1. This is a breakthrough, as rally coverage has traditionally relied on in-car cameras rather than a driver's-eye view from the helmet.
“We are going to strengthen the media department to ensure that we take a new approach to content production. In Sardinia, we are going to test this helmet camera,” said WRC Promoter CEO Eric Boullier to Motorsport.com. “It is the same technology used in Formula 1, so I contacted them to ensure that we could test it.”
The test will be conducted by M-Sport Ford. If successful, footage from the camera could be used in television coverage during the rally weekend. This would offer fans a fresh perspective on the action.
“One of the M-Sport cars will have the camera in Sardinia, and we want to conduct a live test. We will test it on Thursday and Friday and, if it works, you might see it in the live broadcast,” Boullier revealed. His comments underline WRC's commitment to delivering a more immersive viewing experience.
If the trial succeeds, the helmet camera could become a new standard in WRC broadcasts. It would bring viewers closer to the cockpit, experiencing every bump and manoeuvre. This could also attract sponsors and broadcasters seeking more engaging content.
By adopting F1 technology, WRC is showing it does not want to be left behind in broadcast innovation. The season finale in Sardinia will be a proving ground for whether this helmet camera becomes a game-changer or remains an experiment. Either way, rally fans have something to look forward to.
