Teemu Suninen and Roope Korhonen are locked in an extremely tight WRC2 battle at WRC Finland 2026 after Friday morning’s loop, with Korhonen leading the category by just 0.6 seconds over Suninen.
The fight extends beyond the two Finnish drivers. Mikko Heikkila and Robert Virves remain close behind, leaving the top four WRC2 contenders separated by only 2.1 seconds. Jari-Matti Latvala is the fastest Rally2 driver overall, although he is not registered to score WRC2 points.
Korhonen struggled to find his strongest rhythm on Laukaa because of changing grip levels before increasing his pace on the remaining morning stages. He stressed the importance of maintaining commitment without producing major slides or mistakes that could compromise his challenge.

Suninen also built momentum throughout the morning and set the fastest WRC2 time on Hoho to move ahead of Virves and Heikkila. However, he admitted being more cautious on Sydanmaa after seeing slippery sections and several cars leave the road.
Limited preparation has added another challenge for Suninen. After winning the European Rally Championship round in Poland with Skoda the previous weekend, he has had to readjust to the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 for WRC Finland 2026.
“We used all the time and energy we had, but we should have done more. There just wasn’t enough time, and that’s where we lost a little,” Suninen said.
Both drivers agreed that maximum commitment will be required during the afternoon loop. “You simply have to go as fast as you can here. There’s no other way,” Korhonen said. Suninen added that all of the leading contenders would be pushing close to the limit because the margins remain so small.
The battle also gained a light psychological edge when Korhonen joked that Suninen was already nervous enough without needing further mind games. Suninen responded that the real answer would come on the Power Stage, adding another layer to the WRC2 contest as WRC Finland 2026 continues.
