Sebastien Ogier will start Saturday at WRC Finland 2026 as the overall leader after navigating Friday’s extreme rain successfully, while openly challenging Toyota team-mate Elfyn Evans to increase the pressure in the fight for victory.

Ogier maintained his consistency as torrential rain created major differences in conditions between crews during Friday afternoon’s loop. The decisive moment came on the second pass through Sydänmaa, where Sami Pajari lost around 30 seconds and slipped behind Evans in the overall classification.

Ogier ended Friday with a 16.3-second advantage over Evans, while Pajari held third place 26.7 seconds from the lead. “It was all very close, but in the afternoon, with the weather, it was a different story for everybody. We all tried to go fast, but at the same time to survive the craziness,” Ogier said.

“It looks like we managed it quite well as we increased our lead this afternoon. So that’s very positive,” he added. Dry and sunny conditions are forecast for Central Finland on Saturday, potentially providing a more consistent surface than drivers faced during Friday’s weather-hit stages.

Ogier expects Evans to step up his attack and openly invited his team-mate to fight. “He needs to push. That’s important for him. So let’s fight,” Ogier said. With more stable conditions expected, outright pace could become a greater factor than the advantages or losses created by Friday’s changing rain.

Evans admitted Friday afternoon had effectively become a lottery. Running first on the road gave him a major advantage on the second pass through Saarikas as several Rally1 rivals behind encountered much heavier rain, although the situation reversed on the following stage when a torrential downpour arrived shortly before his start.

Toyota’s internal battle now becomes a central focus heading into Saturday, with Ogier leading Evans while Pajari remains within striking distance. WRC Finland 2026 continues with eight special stages on Saturday, giving Evans an immediate opportunity to answer Ogier’s challenge.
