The factory Honda MotoGP team will play no further part in the Australian Grand Prix weekend after effectively running out of fit riders to field at Phillip Island.
Luca Marini was already representing the squad solo on-site, but he fell unwell on Friday and could only manage to complete two slow practice laps before pulling into the pits.
Honda officially announced just before Saturday's track action commenced that Marini would be unable to compete for the remainder of the weekend after being declared unfit by MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte.

"For the past week, Luca Marini has been suffering from a viral condition and a high fever for three to four days," said Dr. Charte regarding the Italian rider's physical state.
"For the last 48 to 72 hours, he has been suffering from muscle weakness caused by the virus, affecting both his upper and lower body. During the last examination, conducted on Saturday morning, he presented with the same symptoms and was declared unfit," Charte added.
Meanwhile, Marini's regular team-mate Joan Mir has been sidelined since mid-September due to an ongoing illness that his attending medical team has struggled to fully diagnose and resolve.
Paddock rumors at Phillip Island this weekend suggest that Mir might attempt a return to action at next week's Malaysian GP, where Marini's fitness will also be reassessed ahead of the event.
Although Honda faced a similar predicament back in September 2024 at Misano—when both Mir and Marini withdrew due to illnesses—the current scenario is vastly complicated by a total lack of test rider options due to injuries.
Taka Nakagami previously filled in impressively for Mir in Austria but broke his collarbone on his opening lap in Japan, while Aleix Espargaro also suffered setbacks requiring immediate surgical attention following his brief comeback.
