Toto Wolff has signalled Mercedes support for a major Formula 1 power unit regulation adjustment from the 2027 season onward. The proposed change focuses on revising the balance of power between the internal combustion engine and battery deployment systems following growing criticism of the early 2026 regulation cycle.

The new Formula 1 engine regulations were originally designed around a 50:50 power split between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the enhanced 350 kW electrical systems. However, during the opening races of the season, weaknesses within the concept quickly became apparent, particularly through heavy super-clipping and aggressive lift-and-coast requirements during qualifying and race conditions.

In several situations, drivers have been unable to run flat-out throughout an entire lap because of battery energy limitations. The issue has triggered criticism that wheel-to-wheel racing is becoming overly dependent on energy management rather than pure racing skill. As a result, the FIA and power unit manufacturers have started discussing a revised 60:40 ratio favouring the combustion engine.

The proposal requires a supermajority vote within the Power Unit Advisory Committee, which includes Audi, Honda, Ferrari, Mercedes HPP, Red Bull Powertrains, the FIA, and Formula 1. Approval would require support from four of the five manufacturers alongside both the FIA and Formula 1.

At present, Ferrari and Audi are believed to be the strongest opponents of the proposed change. Audi in particular is reportedly frustrated after investing heavily around the originally agreed 50:50 concept for the new regulation cycle.

Despite Mercedes expected to hold one of the strongest power units under the 2026 regulations, Wolff surprisingly indicated he supports the adjustment because it could improve the quality of racing.

“It is easier to talk from my position, but I think the races are pretty entertaining,” Wolff told media including RacingNews365.

“The Montreal track layout obviously helps in terms of energy, but the changes we anticipated regarding more power and helping the energy deployment look like good changes.”

Wolff also acknowledged that the proposed revisions would require compromises from every manufacturer involved. However, he believes the 60:40 approach appears more sensible than maintaining a configuration that remains overly sensitive to battery management limitations.

“They mean a compromise from each of the engine manufacturers, but it looks like a sensible approach. We haven’t voted on them yet,” he added.

The debate surrounding the 2027 power units has rapidly become one of Formula 1’s most important technical discussions because it could define the long-term direction of the championship between deep electrification and traditional motorsport characteristics. With increasing criticism from drivers and teams regarding the racing impact of the 2026 regulations, pressure on the FIA to find a workable compromise is expected to intensify in the coming months.
